The appeal in support of ladies' golf at Oxford and Cambridge was generously supported by about a quarter of the Society's membership in 2006. With the majority of donors making an annual commitment to the fund, it looks set to grow in the future.
The initial appeal raised just over £2,000 with around £500 a year promised thereafter. The Committee have decided to pay out £250 to each of the universities this year to help with their running costs and the Varsity Match in particular. To enable this support to be sustained and grow in the future, new donors will be very important.
Please contact Lisa Webster, or any member of the Committee for further details.
Ladies who have played golf at Oxford and Cambridge since 1998 are especially indebted to the Speed Trust for their support of ladies’ golf at the two universities, contributing generously to running costs and coaching. While the university sports federations may be duty-bound to support men’s and women’s sports fairly, the Speed Trust was set up by members of the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society to fund the future generations of Blues (i.e. the usually male first team) golfers and we must therefore count ourselves very lucky that they have been so keen to help the ladies’ clubs to get off the ground.
OCLGS have reached a point where we have begun to add our own support to that of the Speed Trust and to start planning for the longer term future of ladies’ golf at Oxford and Cambridge. Nearly half our members have themselves benefited from Speed Trust funding and it is time to start trying to put something back. Those of us who enjoyed the fantastic experience of Oxbridge golf should try to do something to make sure it continues.
Obviously, one-off gifts have been extremely welcome and helpful in raising the initial capital. However, the long term future of any fund’s success lies in getting regular income by standing order. As a guide, the OCGS recommend their members give a minimum of £25 a year to the Speed Trust and former Divots and Stymies are asked to contribute upwards of £10 a year to a separate fund for those teams. The Speed Trust have agreed to ring-fence any funds raised by OCLGS to support women’s golf. The income from funds raised will be paid out to the universities to help with their running costs and the Varsity Match.
Thank you to those are already supporting the fund. If that isn't you, please consider how even a relatively small annual gift could start to make such a difference. Thank you.
